M&A Melodrama at Tata Group: Frenzy to Freeze Prof. Arun Sangwan In a radical depurate from an average of one acquisition each year during 1995-2003, the group carried out 51 mergers and acquisitions during 2004-08. This translates into one M&A every 35.8 days for 5 years in a row. These numbers may well be a world record in M&A space. However, in the past few years, the indefensible valuations of acquisitions, impairment of assets, huge debts, slump in profits, distress sales and the near abandoning of the acquisition strategy raise serious questions on Ratan Tata's leadership and the group’s corporate-level and business-level strategic planning. The 7 Traits of the (Really) Wealthy Prof. Arun Sangwan While most of us remain in awe of the wealthy, we are not inclined to probe their journey to wealth. So I have studied the early life of such people to identify commonalities in their 'actions'. I chose to study their actions as actions are the best proxy for an insight into an individual's thinking. The study does not include people who attained wealth by inheritance or marriage. Based on my research, I present the seven traits of the wealthy. Entrepreneur (South Africa) Tuesday, May 27, 2014
Inventing the Wheel vs. investing in It Prof. Arun Sangwan If you seek stupendous growth in your wealth, investing in an established and or a large business will not serve your goal. Why? One, large businesses do not grow as rapidly. Second, a stake in an established business comes at a huge premium. So it does not leave much room for large gains. What you seek can come from investing in small businesses poised for such growth. So how do you spot such a business? Entrepreneur (South Africa) Wednesday, August 14, 2013
A Startup’s Journey To VC Street – I Prof. Arun Sangwan To be a successful startup takes more than just an idea. The budding entrepreneurs often believe that success is all about the ‘best’ cookies, apparel or carwash. Such myths can wreck your startup at the ideating stage itself. Besides, many myths besiege funding decisions of formal investors. Their decisions are shrouded in mystery. Do they fund ideas? What triggers a favorable decision etc.? A Startups Journey To VC Street – Part II Prof. Arun Sangwan One of the key takeaways from Part-I of this article is that Sauvé investors seek (a) evidence that your idea will work and (b) evidence that you are capable of making it work. Also, that between the two, the latter eclipses the first. And that is because it is your entrepreneurial competencies like ingenuity, leadership, problem solving skills, perseverance, commitment to work and quality etc. which make the idea work in the first place. An example for building a business is included. Ventures Africa Sunday, April 27, 2014
